It has been a while since my last post, and you may need to wait a bit longer still. With the arrival of summer I have had a lot happen all at once, family moving, a wedding, vacation coming up etc. This is only a quick post so you all know I am still here and to give a quick preview of what is coming next…
It may be a bit surprising, but I started tinkering with the SRD’s and got a fair way into a few different prototypes before ever actually playing Pathfinder. I only just recently acquired the Second Edition Pathfinder Beginner Box so I could more easily give it a try. It is a lot of fun and I have had a great time with my wife and kids playing our first campaign!
If I am not mistaken, the d20 prototypes and online system reference document I have been using so far are all first edition. Now that I have played the second edition, and have found it easier to learn and understand, I want to use it as the focus for this project instead. Good news, I also found a link to more online docs of the second edition game mechanics here. As I understand it, this is all Open Game content, so we should be good there.
The next content I want to start working on is related to making a functional demo based on the Solo Adventure at the start of the Beginner Box Hero’s Handbook. I won’t be copying the text of the adventure, but I will show how to have a flow that alternates between the exploration and encounter phases of a game. This will include things like rolling perception checks during exploration, and a variety of mechanics that will be necessary for simple battles. It will be largely word based for this first demo but will help direct a lot of foundational work that will also be needed for more complex games.
After that, I will try to make a demo that includes tile based maps and animated characters for more tactics based encounters. I’m excited to complete these demos and then post about them, so stay tuned, and thanks for your patience!
